| | | Large bumblebee for ID This large bee was found on my parents back wall late one night in January. It was approx 30mm long. Can anyone help with the species? Also is it possible that it is a Queen? |

Hmmm... there are two species you can see during winter as far as I know; the queens of Bombus terrestris, usually quite big and Bombus pratorum a little less so. The Buff-tailed one is larger and often shows a brownish line at the top of the buff-coloured tail.
On account of this and 30mm size I'll go for B. terrestris, though the orangey tail gives a look of pratorum - though doesn't reach 20mm.
