Gitta | I'm not sure. I had a look around today at the site but couldn't see any type of spider. Just as well, cos if I'd found one I'd have given it such a slap on the legs!!!
(Well I would if I had any depth perception left!) |

Gitta | Very unlikely Gitta. The wasp spider-Argiope bruennichi should be all but gone now. Just the egg sacs left.Edge lives in Motherwell too, I'm pretty certain they haven't got to Scotland....yet. Julie

This is november and we still have lots of leaves on the trees. They're normally bare by this time of year. Anybody else notice this? |

| | | Re: Health warning! Hope you're recovering John. Never heard of this sort of thing nor experienced it. At this time of year many of us would have walked into spider webs at head height so something to beware of. I wonder if it's an allergic reaction or whether it might simply be a physical effect - some spider webs are very strong, tough and, of course, have sticky properties. Wonder if it might just have ripped a bit of the eye surface off? Quote: |

The web strand went right across my right eye, but I blinked a few times and thought no more about it. 30 mins later and it felt as if I had put soap in my eye. The eye has virtually closed up, the white has turned a really attractive shade of blood-red and it feels as if I've been punched in the eye, with the surrounding tissue really tender. Has anyone else had the misfortune to tangle with a web and came off worse? Does anyone know if a spider's web has anything likely to cause an allergic reaction? I've taken some antihistamine so the itching seems to have calmed down a bit. | |

it seems to be an allergic reaction. I've been taking antihistamines and the swelling has definitely gone down. I'm really sensitive to insect bites such as midgies, horseflies etc so I wouldn't be surprised if it is a reaction. I've had laser eye surgery so I was a bit worried in case the front flap which the surgeon cuts before lasering came loose (yuck!) but it still seems firmly stuck down. I'm seeing the surgeon tomorrow so I will update when I find out more.
