An interesting individual as you say, with fairly minimal wing venation. Have a look at the these: Ichneumonidae - Pimplinae - I particularly liken it to the Scambus spp., though as always Ichneumon wasps are a confusing bunch!

Yes I was surprised by the paucity of obvious wing venation and hoped (with fingers crossed) that the distinctive pterostigma might help pinpoint the species.
I found this short Wikipedia entry describing the function of the pterostigma very interesting. To be honest I had no idea that it was actually functional: Pterostigma - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

| | | Re: Wasp with interesting pterostigmata Hi Dan - Sorry I should have given size in the op. A fairly accurate measurement based on subject/sensor size makes it a tad over 5mm - to the wing tips.
