| | | Picture-winged fly with red knees and shoulders Stockgrove Country Park, Beds. 18th January 2010. On fence separating coniferous wood and meadow.
Help with identification appreciated as always.

| | | Re: Picture-winged fly with red knees and shoulders Evening Bruce,
Well, you're certainly doing well with the Tephs!
I've drawn a blank with this one! I wonder if an Oxyna sp. is possible? Just a thought based on a photo I've seen, based on nothing more.
Anyone else with an idea?
Take care, Jason |

| | | Re: Picture-winged fly with red knees and shoulders Thanks for your help Jason.
Yes I was really pleased to get this one. It's from the same location as the previous 2 picture-winged species that I posted on WAB a few weeks back.

| | | Re: Picture-winged fly with red knees and shoulders Well, it could always be an over-wintering or ageing (as in 'suntanned greenbottles') colour or something, I suppose - the wing patterning is similar to Tephritis spp. after all - I just can't place the shape of the two black markings on the wing-tip, especially the three-pointed one nearest us.
Hopefully someone else will post! |

| | | Re: Picture-winged fly with red knees and shoulders Jason - I'll take a look later today to see if any of my other shots show anything that might be helpful in arriving at an id.

| | | Re: Picture-winged fly with red knees and shoulders Yes a photo showing more of the wing would be good. Im tempted to say Tephritis spp too but the angle is quite hard. |

| | | Re: Picture-winged fly with red knees and shoulders I would say Tephritis neesii. |

Laurence - I've Googled several images of Tephritis neesii and I'm pretty sure you're right. Here's the other pic (only other view I have) that I promised Jason and Dan and the wing markings look just about spot-on. My other pic
Here's a pic from the Microscopics.org.uk website that shows the wing pattern: Tephritis neesii
I've also found pics with the same red knees and shoulders .
