They're the Lunar Hoverfly Eupeodes corollae I believe. Do you have a dorsal, top-down image at all? Of course, additionally there are other species in this genus - some of which may be inderterminable from a photo. I don't know that for sure, but it's possible.
A nice pair of shots too!
Take care, Jason

| | | Re: Hoverfly ID please Cheers again Jason and acknowledged you at my site with the ID and also added a link to London Invertebrates. My site is Fungalpunk Home Page by the way if you want to have a gander and retrun a link that would be grand.

| | | Re: Hoverfly ID please Dave, nice site you have. I had a look at a few pics, thought you might like to know your Syrphus ribesii is more likely to be Epistrophe grossulariae.
Anyone else think so too? Epistrophe

| | | Re: Hoverfly ID please Rather difficult to be sure from a small, albeit excellent, photo, Janet.
There are so many similarities with these close species. But the spots on tergite 2 do seem a bit broad and tapering; so if the antennae are definitely black, I do agree that Epistrophe grossulariae is a strong possibility. |

| | | Re: Hoverfly ID please I also see your Ladybird is named a 14-spot, looks like a Cream-spot Ladybird. Sorry, just thought you should know
Geoff, the dark triangle on the face also points to Epistrophe. |

| | | Re: Hoverfly ID please Yes as Janet says the hover is Epistrophe grossulariae and ladybird is a cream spot. 14 Spots are yellow and look very different. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
