This photo was being took of the Small Copper butterfly, then we noticed the flies. They seem to have distingtive yellow bellies?
& then there`s this one? Is he constructing something?

The first are Sciarid flies (Sciaridae family) in my opinion. It's one for John ( Oxycera) I think - he specialises in these!
The second is the Marmalade Hoverfly Episyrphus balteatus, a male. It appears to be resting on a mould.

Agree with E. balteatus, but it's on bird dropping.
