Does anyone know how many different kind of Mosquitoe there are in the UK ?.
I found one today in the house, a large one with striped legs, and sounds like a helicopter when it goes past you  ... |

I have found out there are over thirty different kinds that have been recorded, thats amazing.
And i think the one i have is Culiseta annulata ... |

Hi Gordon, sounds like Culiseta annulata, one I had a couple of years ago inside. It was buzzing around my ears, and I had a nasty bite on my ankle but I didn't feel it bite! My pond was full of mossie larva, and it was only done at the end of July!
Not sure how many species but I can check it out.

Weeell, I had this site in my favourites, there's a lot! It looks like these are all in the UK. Species pages — Bluetongue Virus & Culicoides portal
I just found there's 33 species recorded here.

30+ mosquitoes may have been recorded in UK which is not saying that there are that many British mosquitoes!  I suspect more have been here .... especially around airports ....
Anyone interested in the complexity of mosquitoes should get/read 'Mosquitoes' by Keith Snow in the Richmond Naturalists' Handbooks series. It will be slightly out of date on some epidemiological matters now but is excellent for putting mosquitoes into focus historically, taxonomically and ecologically. Snow listed 32 British species in 1990 ....
