Northants garden. 3rd April 2009. Interesting abdomen from this viewpoint.
Unfortunately I only managed the one shot of this fly before it took off. Help with identification appreciated as always:

Good evening Bruce!
It's a Picture-winged Fly from the Tephritidae family - interesting indeed! It is most likely a Tephritis sp., though it will be impossible to get to species-level without a look at the exact wing pattern... though I'll see if I can try further

A bit tricky as Jason says, but I believe Tephritis hyoscyami is a strong contender.
