This was photographed in south africa by my niece, I have tried to find it on google images under Insects/ caddis flies and various other things to no avail, could anyone on here help please? cheers Richard.

Hi Richard,

Whilst it has a resemblance to a grass moth from the Crambidae family, I think it's actually a grass seed-head, one of them so-called ' grass darts', in my opinion. I can't quite place it as an insect - though being from Africa I'm not too versed up on the more tropical species!

Looks to me like a 'bag worm' ... effectively a moth caterpillar that builds and carries about a home made from pieces of grass. |
