| | | Bit of a worry wasp type creature Hi all
i live in south devon i was cleaning my daudhters bed room when a wasp like creature flew past me a few dayys ago
i caught it in a glass and did my best to photograph it
It was bigger and longer than a wasp jet black in colour with sort of a tail on the end of its body and it had bright orange legs.
When trapped in the glass it let off a smell and tried to attack the glass the tail seemed to split in 2 and a sting almost the length of its body popped out and tried stinging at the glass
I have found another 1 today in my toddlers bedroom what the hell is it where did it come from and will it hurt us?????
thanks in advance

| | | Re: Bit of a worry wasp type creature Hi Chris,
Looks like a member of the ichneumonids. These are parasites but only on other insects such as caterpillars and other larvae. What looks like a sting is actually an ovipositor, something like a hypodermic needle with which the insects deposits an egg inside the caterpillar. The caterpillar is then eaten alive from the inside out. Lovely!! I'm not sure where it came from but I'm sure other more knowledeable members can throw more light on the subject. I'm pretty sure it poses no danger to yourself. They do look scarey, though!!

it must be the mild weather, lets hope they are well tucked up when there is a cold snap

| Sort implies the host insects must be doing well,as well, at this time of year, which has enabled the ichneumons to emerge in autumn.
