| | | Some Winter hoverflies. Managed to get some hoverfly shots yesterday aided by some rare sunshine and a sugar/honey/spirullina spray on some camelia leaves. $ different species- fair idea on the ID of the first 3 but not sure on the last one.

| | | Re: Some Winter hoverflies. Morning Brian,
Hmmm... maybe a Platycheirus sp. - do you have any other angles? The others are a dark Episyrphus balteatus, Eristalis sp.? and a Syrphus sp. I'm sure others will get them closr to species as your pictures show key parts such as faces and legs
Nice winter records!
Take care, Jason |

Your last specimen is almost certainly Meliscaeva auricollis - face seems yellow rather than black. At this time of year it is one of the few that is out.

| | | Re: Some Winter hoverflies. We have a huge Fatsia Japonica out in the front N-facing garden and it has been alive with bees and hoverflies while the plant was in flower, it is just going over now. An excellent plant for small birds like Wrens,Tits and Goldcrests

Think #3 is Syrphus torvus because of the fairly obvious hairs on the eyes.

| | | Re: Some Winter hoverflies. Agree with #1, female Episyrphus balteatus.
#2 looks like female Eristalis tenax due to the broad facial stripe, black tarsi and the inflated dark back leg can be seen. I had both these on the wall in the sun on Wednesday, one after the other!
