| | | Re: Unidentified ladybird Evening Bruce,
I think that's a variant form of the 10-spotted Ladybird.
Take care, Jason |

| | | Re: Unidentified ladybird 50/50! Bruce, a side shot would in this case be useful. The Harlequin has a small bump on the downward slope of both sides of the elytra at the back end. It is quite noticable and yours could have them but it's not really showing.
The 10-spot has a much shallow shape and this should show also if it's that with a side view. Very unusual! It looks like a gold painted rim around the edges! This may be giving the impression along with white above it that the elytra is slightly shallow. I think I can see small bumps too on the back of the elytra but can't be sure so at the moment I'm backing it both ways.

| | | Re: Unidentified ladybird I am leaning towards the 10-spot myself, but in this case being cautious unless I can see a different view. They can be very similar, I have mentioned before that I had a Harlequin which looked like a 10-spot but it has those telling bumps on the elytra. |

| | | Re: Unidentified ladybird Chris, Jason, Janet and nutmeg - Thanks for all your help everyone.
I do have quite a few shots of this ladybird taken from various viewpoints.
Chris and Janet - I've just done a very careful check on size and it measures 4.2mm as seen in the posted image. The Harlequin ladybird Survey website gives a size of 7-8mm for harlequins. It goes on to say: "If it's less than 5mm it is definitely not a harlequin ladybird". So I guess that rules out harlequins.
I've done quite a bit of Googling on the 10-spot (I'm now pretty sure that's what it is) and it appears that the type with black wing-cases and orange-red spots is known as the "netted" form.
