| | | Vaguely remembered invertebrate I hope someone can help me with this.
Back in primary school I used to occasionally find a small creature on the playground (or was it the playing field? I don't recall) and I'm trying to find out what it was.
I'm sure it's going to be entirely common and well known, but I can't seem to find out what it is as there are no ID guides which you can interrogate anecdotally...
My mind attaches the term 'silverfish' to it, but pictures of creatures known as silverfish look nothing like it.
Obviously I can't provide a photo, and only remember it imperfectly, but here is as good a description as I can provide:
Size: very small, probably less than 0.5cm long, and several times longer than it is wide.
No visible legs, at least not when viewed from above.
If there were any body segments I don't remember seeing them, but it was very small (as was I).
Colour is mostly black, with a red stripe across the middle, which earned it the nickname spot, at the time of which I write.
I hope someone can put me out of my misery.
Thank you |

| | | Re: Vaguely remembered invertebrate Hi and welcome to the WAB forums.
I dont know what it was you saw, but if you can provide a little more detail, perhaps we`ll have a better idea, did it have antennae ?, did it move in a straight line ?, what part of the country are you in ?, what time of year was it ?, and anything else you can remember .
The only thing i can think of, is a Click Beetle, but i`m probably miles off ... |

| | | Re: Vaguely remembered invertebrate Evening R, and welcome to WAB
I remember being fascinated by these at school/home when I was a kid. I infact posted about this one recently and other members have had similar stories of it from their childhood. A nostalgic insect!
Follow this link - any matches? Rove Beetles - Subfamily Tachyporinae Photo Gallery by Tom Murray at pbase.com
They are known as Rove Beetles, from the sub-family 'Tachyporinae', taxonomically.
Hope this helps!
Take care, Jason | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
