| | | Chalcid wasp ? and friends Think this is a chalcid wasp around 2.5mm body length and very black all over but had some mite friends. 2nd shot is a crop from the first with 2 of the mites in it- they come out at about 0.15mm long. Taken at 5:1 FF with an MPE-65 lens

| | | Re: Chalcid wasp ? and friends Superb shot - very well done - that MP-E65 is an incredible piece of work but how do you get the depth of field? What flash system are you using?
I am guessing that the mites are phoretic - hitchhikers, rather than parasites. I see them a lot of samples of neotropical Hymenoptera and Diptera, all clustered together and holding on for dear life.
The "chalcid" might be a chalcid but it isn't common to see all-black ones so it could be one of the other groups - not sure. Did you get any dorsal shots?

DOF is from focus stacking several shots (by hand) - flash is just my std 430Ex diffused flash on a bracket. Camera on RHS in this pic Flickr Photo Download: camera rigs although I'm using a 5Dmk2 now with the MPE-65
Slightly more dorsal view of what I'm pretty certain is the same species (not the same specimen though) here Flickr Photo Download: Chalcid wasp

| | | Re: Chalcid wasp ? and friends Hi Brian,
Sorry, I can't help with the ID other than it being a Chalcidoidea! As Chris says - do you have a dorsal? I'm sure in such cases wing venation would help get to family at least.
I love the images by the way! What a lovely piece of kit the MPE-65 is... amazing detail. Do the antennas look like they've been sprinkled with desicated coconut, or is it just me? Just me then...
Take care, Jason |

| | | Re: Chalcid wasp ? and friends Brian - how about Scelionidae or Platygastridae?
See this page of Keys for the latter group... http://www.waspweb.org/Platygastroidea/Keys/index.htm Being as though I have a lovely Linux OS, I'm unable to use them, or get suitable plug-ins...

Not that I'm much good at small wasp ID's but pretty certain it's not a Scelionid wasp - they always look like charging spanish bulls to me - much larger head to body size than this but might be Platygastridae.
I sometimes get an American University prof helping me with ID's of these on flickr but he's not seen this one yet
