Size (including ovipositor) 7mm.

| | | Re: Female ichneumon wasp for id pls. I will be watching this with interest Bruce, I got one yesterday similar about 5mm without ovipositor. The ovipositor is longer and has a lot of hairs on it!
That fence seems to be as productive as my wall!

Bruce | I've posted a similar pic of one, on a few forums a while ago, never had an id from the pic. Probably needed a lot of different angles to stand a chance.
Col
Ps try Hymis they're pretty good as recommended by ChrisR http://www.forum.hymis.de/index.php?...9ef653104a63f7

| | | Re: Female ichneumon wasp for id pls. Looks way to anonymous to me to even suggest a family, let alone a genus or species - HymIS is definitely your best bet with all ichneumons
I just received a small batch of ichneumons from South America - there are some exceptional things in there but identifications are way, way, waaaaaaay out of the question! I don't think I can post photos here (non-British) but check my blog if you are interested. This one is particularly jewel-like

| | | Re: Female ichneumon wasp for id pls. My thoughts too that it wouldn't be an easy one, I have so many wasps as well as other insects it will take me a lifetime to get around them all! I keep adding to them all the time too... I did get more angles of mine, and it looks very similar to Bruce's but just a little different so it may be the same genus (or not!).
If you happen to get anywhere with yours Bruce let us know
Wow Chris, 15mm is huge for such a wasp, a beauty! |

| | | Re: Female ichneumon wasp for id pls. Col - Thanks for posting your pic and comments. Yes very similar and yes I this one might pose a problem as it's a bit short on diagnostic colours or markings.
Chris - Thanks for that suggestion. I'd not heard of HymIS before but will give them a try as you suggest. That French Guianan chalcid is a cracker and (as you said) very reminiscent of our little Ruby-tailed wasp.
Janet - If I get an id from HymIS I'll let you know.
