| | | Yellow barkfly with speckled wings Stony Stratford, Bucks. Old wooden fence beneath ash, willow and sycamore.
Size: 4.5mm
Despite the bright yellow head I would never have spotted this fellow (or lass) if it hadn't moved. It was extremely well camouflaged and seemed to disappear whenever it stopped moving.
I thought it would be a cinch to id on the NBRS website but...... .. So help with an id would be appreciated.

| | | Re: Yellow barkfly with speckled wings Evening Bruce, *Barkfly! Rubs hands together *
It looks for all the Earth like a Loensia sp. Based on the dark-brown speckled wings.
Do you have a side-on shot? Dorsals work well with the Ectopsocus genera and the like, because they have wings held low to the ground and you get to see it best from up above. However, with these ones you really need a lateral because the wings are more upright. I can't see the venation enough to key it out, either.
Ideally, these Psocopterans need three angles if possible - top-down just in case, a side-on for examining wing venation and a head-on in case it needs ratios of facial features looking at.
Sorry I can't be of more help! It's a great photo, too.
Take care, Jason EDIT: It's a male - they have the larger eyes!

| | | Re: Yellow barkfly with speckled wings Jason and Joe - Thanks for your help with identification. I do have a slightly messy lateral pic (see below), however I failed to talk it into posing for a photo showing the bits needed for a firm id .

| | | Re: Yellow barkfly with speckled wings Thanks for the additional side-shot - though the patterning is obscuring the veins too much! ( ...nothing to do with photographic angles, just the density of patterning)
Dissection job on the genetalia I'm afraid

| | | Re: Yellow barkfly with speckled wings You can apparently separate them on the basis of precise wing length, if you can get a measurement? It's pretty subtle, though: 3.8 mm or 3.3-3.7 mm! |
