Is this sort of thing fairly common in the insect world?

You often get slight variations between individuals but aberrations like this are quite unusual. Worth noting down in case it is a common thing with this species.

Well, I've never seen that before! I best go through my images now just in case... in general though, it does happen from time to time and are I think called anomalies? I think your individual is Ectopsocus briggsi.

I've seen similar things in leafhoppers quite commonly - some species appear to be particularly prone to it. In other cases, though, the vanation is vital to the ID, so it can be quite a pain if it's doing things like this!
