Plague of small flying insects
Cycling home through the lanes after a walk I encountered huge swarms of flying insects. I call them midges but they don't bite. After 25 plus dry days they may have held back hatching till it rained. More than I have seen before, should have taken a snap of my plastered arms, legs, shorts and shirt. Some spiders webs in back garden had also ensnared many. Main group were in a lane with high hedges, fields behind were grass with grazing stock. Approx time: 1720 hrs (Sunday 4th Oct) location rural Somerset.
Anybody experience anything similar or know more?

There are non biting midges. Maybe it was these.
