Yes it is, they are quite variable.

A magnificent picture - I love the detail there! Yes, it appears a little blacker, doesn't it. I put that down to falling temperatures and heat conservation.

Yes indeed not just Episyrphus but also other hoverflies like Eristalis and beetles like ladybirds all become darker in relation to temperature to absorb more heat and utilise it more efficiently. Its not uncommon to find almost entirely melanic Episyrphus at this time of year. | | |
