Wasp behaviour

We see lots of nature docs on social insects' behaviour, however, in 'real life' it truly is facinating !!

Moved into action by shame this evening, I decided to de-pondweed some of the water surface. Half an hour later I was still guiltily going through the discarded pile putting ramshorn snails and the odd tadpole back into the water when I noticed a wasp floating on the water, same wasp I'd been keeping an eye on while scooping weed out. Being allergic I carefully scooped it out and put it in the sodden weed pile. A few mins later a wasp arrived and started to hunt around in the weed pile, another few mins later a second one arrived. They were actually looking for their fellow wasp Not keen on them myself but how impressive was that

I have wasps land on the water to drink, they have learnt to skim the water to take off again! Yours may have been doing the same. For a start I noticed they were more cautious, graduating to duckweed or fairy moss before taking the leap.

I wonder if those landing on the pile were just wanting a drink, or hunting for food?
