| | | Re: Variety of flies for ID Evening Seb, #1: Muscina prolapsa?? #2: A hoverfly I think - do you have a dorsal? #3: Maybe a Limoniidae member? ( Generally called Folded-winged Craneflies - they fold them over their back as opposed to at 90' angles as in Tipulidaes, for example) #4: Arge/ Athalia sp. Maybe Athalia rosae? #5: For the sake of accuracy I would need a facial or direct side-on, but an initial look makes me think the common Calliphora vicini which has an orange ' Anterior spiracle', AKA a breathing hole. Other pointers include orange cheeks. #6: Caddisfly?? #7: Oooh, the genus escapes me!
Take care, Jason |

| | | Re: Variety of flies for ID Evening Jason!
Wow thanks guys. And thank you Jason for such a detailed answer. No dorsal Im afraid, these pics were one click shots probably why I still have them unidentified! The Caddisfly I must admit I thought was a Stone fly but someone else also told me a Caddis. Its interesting because it looks so dissimilar to other caddis flies I have shot |

Top Middle (Do you have a larger image something that shows the wings more clerly?)
(Bottom Second Left) Calliphora sp (Carnt see an orange spiracle Jason?)
(Bottom Second Right) Do you have a side view which shows the wings? Its a Limnephilid

I think I said it as a starting point - that I thought that bit may be obscured and that statistically it's likely? I shouldn't have gone that far without waiting for a further image, though. Point quite obviously taken!

| | | Re: Variety of flies for ID I wouldnt worry about it Jason I do that sort of thing all the time its nice to get it to species but sometimes its best to leave it as it is. You carnt see enough detail to be exact (Well I carnt anyway). |

| | | Re: Variety of flies for ID Thanks all for your views. Unfortunately Dogghound I am not much help, the largest I have of this image is a shown. If I enlarge it will just end up a blur. Sometimes genus level isnt that bad though, its better than having an unknown! |

| | | Re: Variety of flies for ID Just googling some images on pic No.1. Helina does not seem to have the thoracic stripes that my specimen shows, whereas Muscina does. Any thoughts? | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
