I have checked on the web and it matches - thank you. The dorsal markings are the same as the web image. The only difference I could see was the black marking on the wing case.

Your Whitefly Peter, I got pics of one recently which could be Honeysuckle Whitefly, Aleyrodes lonicerae. It looks very simiilar but you can't see the black inverted 'V' shape on the wings on yours, it does have a pink eye though. | Thanks From what I have read about whitefly , it is very difficult to sort out the individual species from a photo. Thats a bit like the moth fly which I have photographed but cannot get beyond the family name .

There are 29 of them in the UK - which to the best of my knowledge need dissecting to get further, or at the very least a specimen under a microscope for wing venation ( though the white scales would need removing from the dorsal surface in a solution to see them!) - unfortunately plenty have pink eyes I should think! |

Nowadays I am delighted to be able to take reasonable images for my 'collection' without disturbing a subject. On this basis, I am happy to accept a family name where further ID is not posible from an image.
Janet, I shall look out for the inverted V in future expeditions.
Thanks so much for your help

Merely a tip to look out for, and a noted similarity. The shape may have been there but not shown up at that angle. Quote:

| You're welcome Peter. It is much better as you say to be able to take pics of them, and with being able to see all these tiny creatures in detail one does feel for them. Once a tiny black insect was just that, now I see it through the lens and am amazed at what I see. This morning I found one of those tiny things stuck to the steamed up back door inside, it was a tiny Barkfly! I got it on my finger, it seemed OK other than having one wing stuck to it's antenna so I put it on a plant outside to dry out. |

Thanks

The image in my archive http://www.imageinuk.com/True-Flies-...0_9qVEq-XL.jpg would have been enough.
