| | | Hornets in Richmond Park watched a couple patrolling coarse grass around Adam's Pond (Sheen Gate) at dusk this evening. I'd like to go back and get some photos if they are still around tomorrow. Is dusk generally a good time to spot them? Also they appeared to me to be looking for spiders - do they eat them? |

| | | Re: Hornets in Richmond Park The nest we found in Brede High Woods seems to quieten down as dusk approaches. they seem a lot more active in the day. Took these this afternoon. |

| | | Re: Hornets in Richmond Park The last couple of summers I've seen few Hornets in Richmond Park; previously pretty common. They are voracious predators so may well be after the spiders. I've seen them patrolling Ragwort flowers there taking insects, including Small Coppers. |

| | | Re: Hornets in Richmond Park I have seen more hornets than ever this year but I am a bit wary of trying to get a photo. What is a safe distance without disturbing them? |

| | | Re: Hornets in Richmond Park The closer of the pictures above that I took was from around 8" away as it was exiting the tree containing the nest. As the hornets exited the nest they showed no aggression towards me at all. When they were coming back they wouldn't fly back in with me so close and started to get agitated so I backed off to let them in.
I've been returning to this nest since we first found it on the 5th September and they are getting slightly more aggressive on each visit. I assume this is as the season comes to an end rather than getting ticked off with me keep taking their pictures. |

The closest I have been is about 6 feet and I still didn't get a photo as it wouldn't settle and then more appeared so I disappeared. |
