| | | Arion slug ID Hi there,
I found this ( Arion?) slug recently. Note the measure down left.
Any idea what species it is? Is it possible that they turn pale as they grow?
Cheers |

| | | Re: Arion slug ID Hi Ape,
The orange foot suggests Arion ater - size is good too, but may be wrong.
Take care, Jason |

| | | Re: Arion slug ID Hi all Arion ater and Arion rufus are identical and in some cases A.rufus is classified as a subspecies of the former. I have had many conversations with an expert over these two and without dissection it is more or less impossible to deduce which one it is. There is a belief that Arion ater is parthenogenic and never mates, whereas A.rufus needs a mate to reproduce.
Long and short of it, if its for a technical reference you are better off just labelling it as the Arion genus |

| | | Re: Arion slug ID A very well researched answer there, Seb. I may have some relabeling to do, that said! |

| | | Re: Arion slug ID I must be honest Jason I have read so many conflicting articles, it makes me wonder if anyone really knows! For my site I have used both species on the same page as I have no way in identifying them properly. Terrible things to ID are slugs! |
