| | | Unidentified loud-buzzing flying insect Last week on holiday on Tanera Mor, Summer Isles, Scotland, an extremely loud buzzing insect flew into my room. Night time, window open, lamp on. About 1 1/2 " long, winged, dark brown/black with two yellowy orange bands near base of body. Quite chunky. Looked like tiny waving 'arms' inbetween the wing bases, or could have been very hairy. Please help identify. |

| | | Re: Unidentified loud-buzzing flying insect Does anyone have any suggestions of good websites with photos that I could browse through to find this insect. Will check hornets, but to me the most unusual thing about it was the noise - really loud, intense buzz. Thanks for all help. |

| | | Re: Unidentified loud-buzzing flying insect I rememeber a couple of threads a little while ago about large buzzing insects and they turned out to be chafers. Any chance that this was one?
I couldnt find an image in the Gallery that showed bands of colour but this does... http://www.maths.dundee.ac.uk/~ingeb...mmerChafer.jpg
I'm quite happy to be right off the mark here

| | | Re: Unidentified loud-buzzing flying insect I think we might be getting closer. This is definitely the closest to the insect that I saw. I will email the island owners to see if it is a species they have seen before. Thank you. |

| | | Re: Unidentified loud-buzzing flying insect Hello.
I think I may have encountered the same mystery beastie last night, it flew in my bedroom window, it was huge, fat, and very very loud, it had such a loud buzz that when it landed on the table, a few items vibrated !. I managed to capture it using the good old glass and paper technique, it looked like a cross between a beetle and a wasp ( not a wasp beetle though, already looked at that one) it appeared to be black with broad yellow stripes on wing cases, had a pointed rear end, but not like a wood wasp pointed, and the end of it's antenna had little blobs on the end.
I've trawled through lots of sights, and this thread seemed to be describing what I saw the closest, can't find any photo that looks remotely like what I saw.
I live in Scotland, Fife.
Could it be a foreign visitor ?
ps, as you may have guessed I know nothing about insects, just very curious as to what this could have been. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
