Great year for Red Admirals

Saw plenty of second brood Red Admirals today.
It has been a good year but what has happened to the Small Tortoiseshells?

They are about, its just that all the Red Admirals and Painted Ladies are drawing our attention away from them.

Yes. We've got loads of RA's on the move south still. I have to admit, I've not seen one small tortoiseshell. Think they had problems in the spring according to a thread a while back. Julie

I've seen a few Small T's but not in such numbers as the Red Admirals and Painted Lady's

I've not seen one ST, but truckloads of Red admirals.

I think it's been a very good year for all butterflies with the exception of the Small Tortoiseshells, certainly not been many where I am. Can only recall seeing four all year

Well, I saw two red admirals in S. Sheffield last week which is pretty good going, especially at this time of year! Nothing like the deepest south though!

I have had to evict eight Red Admirals and one Small Tortoiseshell from the house over the last three days

I ruined my crop of grapes this year by growing tomatos in with them.. but there is a silver lining to every cloud.. that is clouds of RA in the conservatory eating the rotten grapes. That is a first this year. I usualy only have Small Tort. in the back garden and the RA and Peacock concentrate on the rotting plums I leave for them... and I have whole fleets of RA at times.. once counted 23 at one time!!!!!
