| | | 2 flies proving difficult to ID Just inland from the S. Coast path, today.
I was thinking Stratiomyidae family but after checking the Dipteria site the best I can suggest is Beris sp. Those pale legs are outwitting me.
And I also thought this one would be easy but I've checked through Asilidae, Empididae and Tabanidae sections without success. But I may have missed something obvious, once again.
So can some kind person point me in the correct direction please. |

| | | Re: 2 flies proving difficult to ID Thanks once again.
From the side it looked, to me, like an Asilidae or something similar so I never even thought about Sciomyzidae family.
It is the first time that I have noticed this species. I assume it is female.
The green thorax fly looks slightly similar to Chloromyia formosa, which was quite common here in the summer, but the legs are too pale, especially the femora, and it is getting a bit late for them now. |

| | | Re: 2 flies proving difficult to ID Evening Geoff,
Try Sargus bipunctatus for the first. I don't suppose you have a shot of it with it's wings open, do you? If it is S. bipunctatus, it should have a small orange abdominal segment just by the thorax. The orange legs look good for it though.
Take care, Jason

Have searched a few images and they all look good, except the first photo on this site which looks more like an Asilidae, possibly a Dioctria sp. or similar species.
From the distribution map (at least the best I can find for this area) they aren't over common so I will offer it as a local record and see what they say. |

The first fly looks like Sargus bipunctatus, your second is as Dogghound says, though has a bit of a Robberfly look to it
Take care,

| | | Re: 2 flies proving difficult to ID What I meant, Jason, was the first place where I went for a photo check was the WAB Gallery and the first image there, under Sargus, was this and I question that this image is a Sargus.
I have checked through my other photos of my fly and they all have the wings closed. I was gradually moving the tripod closer but while I was untangling it from the undergrowth to attempt another angle the fly must have got bored and flew.
But I don't think there is any question of ID now. |
