[ID] Leafhopper: Cicadella viridis?

Hi all,

This little bugg... I mean bug, is posing me real problems...

Is it Cicadella viridis...
...or someone else?

I've spent about 3.5hrs comparing it... and that much time later I am still no surer than I was way back when. It looks OK most of the time, but the wings don't look quite right. Or the pronotum. Or the lower head for that matter! Help!!

Hi Jason,

I don't think its C. viridis, not with those four black spots on the head. How about one of the Cicadula spp., maybe something like Cicadula aurantipes?

ps. where did you find it, habitat and host plant and how big was it?

I'm guessing this was between 3 and 4 mm and in a wet sort of place (at least a damp meadow), because it's a Macrosteles species. This is a really hard genus, and usually comes down to dissection, unfortunately... but I suspect it's a different one to any I've seen before.

Thanks Steve and Joe. It was found in a meadow, but what constitutes a 'Damp' one... an area of grassland near a body of water? It was 'just' a wildflower meadow surrounded by brambles, umbellifers, long grass, etc. - though there was a small pond 100m away.

Hi all, I'm Danny Davies. new member,
Strange, I have looked at this insect, and it looks similar to what I found on the dead Frog-hopper. I wasn't sure what it could be. At first I thought it might have been that the Frog-hopper was host to another insect, which had laid eggs in it, and the small insect was the larva that came out of it.
What do members think.

Glad to see the picture! It's the Common Froghopper Philaenus spumarius, which has been wrapped-up in silk by a spider.
