| | | wasp or hornet Hi I found this website because I saw something today which I have never seen anywhere never mind the uk. It looked like a wasp but it was around two inches long with long legs and a stinger that was almost a centimetre long. It also had two black "feeler" type things protruding from its abdomen. I thought it had to be a queen of something so I expect one of them was the thing that laid the eggs but the other "feeler" was slightly different. I took a pic of it off my phone and as soon as I work out how to get it posted I will. Hope someone can help because I would really like to know what this beast of a thing is |

| | | Re: wasp or hornet Hi Streaky, and welcome to WAB
Two suggestions while we await the photos. Firstly, an Ichneumon wasp like a Pimplinae member, second - a Giant Wood Wasp such as Urocerus gigas, in Latin. The spiky-sounding abdomen will have likely consisted of the protective sheath, and the other bit being an ovipositor for, as you say, laying the eggs.
Take care, Jason |

| | | Re: wasp or hornet Yeah I think it was after searching it on the internet. They are pretty scary looking and that was the first time I have seen one. I have a caravan up in tummel valley in scotland and its amazing what I see up there sometimes. |

| | | Re: wasp or hornet these seem to be often confused with hornets. probably because of their size | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
