| | | Can anyone help I've just joined and whilst photographing bees in my garden saw this and haven't seen one before, and although its markings are distinct have been unable to identify it.

| | | Re: Can anyone help Hello Leaward and welcome to WAB. It looks like some kind of Bee Fly or large Hover Fly, but which one I don't know. I'm sure someone will be along in due course with the answer. There's a very knowledgeable bunch of people around on WAB |

| | | Re: Can anyone help Definitely Eristalis sp., David.
If you look at the wing veins, about the middle of the wing and just over half way towards the tip you will see a vein with a deep dip. This is characteristic of the Eristalini family.
But they are quite variable in abdomen colouration so it is impossible to get a confirmed identification without clearly seeing the other leg colours.
However, the hind leg of your specimen does have a lot of yellow so I would be tempted to suggest Eristalis pertinax; but without seeing the other legs it is just guess work really. |

| | | Re: Can anyone help It's a female and does look like Eristalis pertinax, they are one of the most common. If you have another view showing the front feet they should be orange.

| | | Re: Can anyone help I'm fairly certain it is eristalis tenax. It is not eristalis pertinax, as the abdomen isn't tapered (search pic on google for eristalis pertinax and you will see what i mean) |

E. tenax does not have the yellowish section on the hind tibia, E. pertinax does. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
