Hi - can anyone ID this cricket - and is the brown thing on his head normal??

It's a male Speckled Bush-cricket. I don't know what the brown thing is, but it is normal & I suspect it has something to do with wings!

According to "Grasshoppers and Allied Insects of Great Britain and Ireland" the male has small, rounded, brownish forewings, which are mainly stridulatory area. The hindwings are absent.

ah ok - well thanks for that....I am becoming a lot more interested in the insect world recently - especially after watching a parasitic wasp's larvae eat its way out of a Large white caterpillar - then use the poor thing to guard their cocoon until they hatched......its a pretty brutal world....
