| | | Two flies for ID please! Hi guys, just a couple from the weekend that I would like to put a name to!
Gathering that this one is a hoverfly;
I've not got my insect literature to hand, and I'm rubbish at it anyways, so I can't remember what this common old fly is! Please someone help!
All help much much much appreciated!

| | | Re: Two flies for ID please! Evening Nick! #1: Is a Tachinid fly, Tachina fera #2: This one's most likely an Anthomyiidae spp., though I can't quite make sense of the wing venation. I don't suppose you have any others? These black/white ones can also be Muscids... |

| | | Re: Two flies for ID please! ...ah, but that was two Nick! I may take you up on that soon
Seriously, the first is hoverfly-esque, and certainly one of the more colourful of the often black/grey/brown tachinids. |

| | | Re: Two flies for ID please! I did see a few of each of the flies- bloody loud things when they fly past your face at great speed!
Ok, I think I can stretch to 2 ID's |

| | | Re: Two flies for ID please! The second one is in the family Muscidae, should be Graphomya maculata female but there is a similar one, G.minor. The male has a brownish colour abdomen.
There is another one apparently, G. picta, differences mentioned here: Muscid Fly (Graphomya maculata)
But as I was thinking this could be G. minor I checked, and it is. The Society for the study of flies (Diptera)
G. maculata is more common, this site mentions G. minor is generally more restricted to wetlands, and also has the "anterodorsal bristle on the mid tibia." Kent Field Club current newsletter
Safest to stick with Graphomya sp.
