I'm no expert, but it looks like maybe a sawfly, possibly Sirex juvencus, which might have come out of some timbers for your extension.
Cheers
Ken

It looks like an Ichneumon wasp to me... possibly from the Pimplinae sub-family. Are you familiar with these classifications? |

| | | Re: any idea what this bizarre insect is???? I thought it was a female of the specie Diggleken, but Jason, you could be right. It does have the look of the Pimplinae (Ephialtinae) shown in my books. So, basically Lee Smith, what you have is a Wasp. Wonderful thing!

| | | Re: any idea what this bizarre insect is???? The Insect book 1905 Howard. German edit.
US Nat Mus Pubs Bio pI / pII.
Viereck, H.L., 1914. Type species of the genera of Ichneumon Flies.
Taschenberg, E.L., 1866. Die Hymenopteren Deutschlands nach ihren Gattungen und theilweise nach ihren Arten.
Snellen van Vollenhoven, S.C., 1867. Schetsen ten gebruike bij de studie der Hymenoptera. Familie der Ichneumoniden.
Nees, C.G., 1834. Hymenopterorum Ichneumonibus Affinium, monographiae, genera Europaea et species illustrantes.
Picked them up at a library sale in Austria. They are old but interesting, probably a bit out of date too.
I used to get a lot of different Ichneumonoids up on the Alm, Jason and they fascinated me so I went to see what books there were, not many I'm afraid. And those mostly ancient I have a few more back home. All older.
Got a pile of Arachnida tracts too at the same time.
