I guess you're right about Steve - he doesn't have the easiest of jobs and I know he wouldn't miss this out of choice.
Jerry and Jules - can you make it too?
Dave P. | Sadly, I'm not going to make it.
Hope you get loads of good images,

Staverton Lakes are definitely worth a visit, I was impressed by the number of different Dragonfly and Damselfly species we saw there in quite a short time.
We also heard a Kingfisher but unfortunately we didn't see it.

I'm looking forward to visiting a new site and kingfisher would be the icing on the cake - haven't seen one yet this year.

| | | Re: Willow Emerald Damselflies DavyG, you may be interested to know that a new site for these insects has been found just inland from Felixstowe http://www.freewebs.com/proldfield/recentreports.htm
A bit closer to home for you?

| | | Re: Willow Emerald Damselflies Thanks T2, I read that report this morning.
That's another new area for us to investigate, unfortunately, after tomorrow, I'll have no free time until the second weekend in September.
Hopefully we'll get a chance to visit the new sites before the Damsels disappear.

| | | Re: Willow Emerald Damselflies Had an absolutely fantastic day at Staverton Lakes today, courtesy of DavyG and Anita - top class guides! I'm really grateful to you both as nothing beats having someone who is familiar with a site show you the ropes. Plus eagle-eyed Anita was great at spotting the willow emeralds!
They are incredibly beautiful insects and these are my best photos of them:
Ladies first...
...and the male...
A close-up of the male's head and thorax...
As Davy mentioned above, the willow emeralds are far from the only species there. We saw lots of common blue damsels as well as migrant and brown hawkers and ruddy darters. There were a wealth of other insects too - six species of butterfly (small white, green-veined white, red admiral, comma, speckled wood and meadow brown), oak bush cricket, field grasshopper, all sorts of hoverflies, various bees, a number of moths I couldn't put a name to and a bug I haven't yet identified.
Here's a picture of Davy suffering for his art...
That's not just brambles he's standing in, it's a large patch of sting nettles too!

| | | Re: Willow Emerald Damselflies A great day at the lakes and some excellent pics Dave.
It was good to catch up with you again, maybe we can make this into a meet for next year.
These Damsels really are like living jewels, it's good to see them colonising this part of the country.
Oh, I still had nettle rash at 11pm last night!
