| | | Hoverfly help needed! Hello all - this little beauty turned up in my Wolverhampton garden this afternoon and I managed to get one decent shot of her before she left as soon as she had arrived. On consulting Stubbs & Falk, it would seem to be down to either Chrysotoxum festivum or C.vernale – but there's a problem. According to a couple of the keys (the straighter bars on the tergites and brown veining on the wings) it would seem to point to C.vernale rather than the more common C.festivum. But S & F says this about C.vernale: "Little is known about this rarity of south-west England" – which rather clouds the issue, as I live in Wolverhampton. I wonder if anybody out there has any thoughts on this? I'm sure it must be the commoner C.festivum ... |
