| | | Strange woodlouse, or ground beetle larva? ID wanted Found this 25mm insect moving fast in spurts in grassy parkland in Bristol, 5th August 09. Its tapering tail dragged slightly. Over twice the size of a normal woodlouse. Video available. Ideas?

I really don't know! I'll be interested in other views... I've looked up pill millipedes and woodlice, but haven't found anything particularly close. Have you noticed the antennae? Both appear different - moulting an exoskeleton? Oh, and the video sounds good... |

| | | Re: Strange woodlouse, or ground beetle larva? ID wanted Thanks Dogghound and Jason! I never realised beetle larvae looked like that. But searching on the net gives virtually no obvious resources for photos of the larvae. I did find a USA silphid larva pic at Silphid larvae - BugGuide.Net which looks broadly similar.
I do have a short medium-close-up video clip but I can't see anywhere here to upload video. It's not a great clip but I'll put it on Youtube if you like? |
