Found this 25mm insect moving fast in spurts in grassy parkland in Bristol, 5th August 09. Its tapering tail dragged slightly. Over twice the size of a normal woodlouse. Video available. Ideas?

I really don't know! I'll be interested in other views... I've looked up pill millipedes and woodlice, but haven't found anything particularly close. Have you noticed the antennae? Both appear different - moulting an exoskeleton? Oh, and the video sounds good... |

Its the larvae of one of the silphids. Looks like S.atrata. |

Thanks Dogghound and Jason! I never realised beetle larvae looked like that. But searching on the net gives virtually no obvious resources for photos of the larvae. I did find a USA silphid larva pic at Silphid larvae - BugGuide.Net which looks broadly similar.
I do have a short medium-close-up video clip but I can't see anywhere here to upload video. It's not a great clip but I'll put it on Youtube if you like? |
