Common Darters Mating I think!
Hello

Took these pictures this morning. I think they show Common Darters mating but do they have to make the complete "circle" to be mating.

It looks like the female is ovipositing - I think they have already mated and the male continues to hold on - I'm not sure why though, I don't know enough about dragonfly "birds and the bees" to say!

Maybe the eggs are fertilized a few at a time?

Yes, they are ovipositing, the male stays attached to prevent any other male from mating with the female before the eggs are laid, thus ensuring his genes are passed on.
