| | | ID needed for 2 crickets and a grasshopper Hi, I'm new to the world of wildlife photography and IDing, and I kinda need help with these:
First pic of the green cricket.
Second pic.
The brown cricket. Only one pic-sorry!
The first pic of the grasshopper.
Second pic of the grasshopper.
If it's any help, the green crickets were found on some marigolds, in full sun all day long. The brown cricket was found amongst a few others, in a slightly darker area of the garden, but sunny in the morning, and the grasshopper was found on my garden path, next to a regularly mowed lawn.
Sorry for the bad quality of pics, I had to use the closest camera to hand! |

| | | Re: ID needed for 2 crickets and a grasshopper Hi Beaux, welcome to WAB and the world of wildlife photography!
Your first two look like one of the Bush-crickets, possibly the Oak Bush-cricket's nymph - Meconema thalassinum in Latin.
Your third photo is most likely the nymph of the Dark Bush-cricket, Pholidoptera griseoaptera.
Your last species, pics 4 & 5, is the adult Field Grasshopper I think, Chorthippus brunneus.
Feel free to re-post if you need more IDs! |

| | | Re: ID needed for 2 crickets and a grasshopper Great, thanks Jason. I had a look on the internet beforehand for some matches, but I didn't think to check the nymphs! Do you know when we might expect to see the adults around, or does it vary a lot? |

| | | Re: ID needed for 2 crickets and a grasshopper I think the first cricket is a speckled bush cricket - Leptophyes punctatissima, being a bit more on the bulky side... the brownish colouration on the top works too |

| | | Re: ID needed for 2 crickets and a grasshopper The speckled bush cricket does fit better than an oak bush cricket in terms of relative size, but they're not speckled! Could it be that they develop their speckled nature later on, or am I just rambling about nothing? Thanks for your help, Gill. |

Thanks for your help, Gill. | They're a little bit speckledy when a little baby - but not really to my eye as an adult

| | | Re: ID needed for 2 crickets and a grasshopper I thought I'd better check again just to see, and on closer inspection they have very, very small speckles. I'll be waiting avidly to see what they become and how they develop. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
