Bee Fly or Hover Fly for ID please
One of the boys thought he had found a hornet in the garden, but it was actually this:

It really was very large, so I wondered whether any of the insect experts might be able to tell us exactly what it is. Thanks

Quite a lot around the west London area now. On Saturday we had 2 of these + the smaller V. inanis together on a flowering Hebe in a small churchyard.
