| | | Two for ID - please! The first is a grasshopper I found today - the only one that appears to have that white back is recorded as a Rufous Grasshopper. Having looked at other images it doesn't look like anyone else's Rufous. I've looked at 'Guy's Grasshoppers and that doesn't seem to help either.
The second is a fly - I haven't a clue what it is but I think it's rather attractive
Cheers!

| | | Re: Two for ID - please! I'm sure your grasshopper is Chorthippus brunneus or Field Grasshopper. I can clearly see a hairy underside.
Don't know your fly but I expect one of the dipterists will be able to help.

| | | Re: Two for ID - please! Thankyou all! Much appreciated.
I plumped for it being most like the Field Grasshopper - but what's going on with the white stripe? It's not over exposure - it had definate white markings. Is this because it's young or is it some kind of mating variation? Or is it just a variant? I'd love to know.
Our (expensive) book told us it was a Rufous - it even had exactly the same white on it too. It's not the first time it's been wrong either...
