| | | Red Admiral and Painted Lady
I am trying to put the latin names to my butterfly photographs. I have searched the Gallery for Red Admiral - Vanessa atalanta but when I searched for Painted Lady, she has the same latin name as Red Admiral.  Which is Vanessa atalanta or are they named the same?

Found the answer: Painted Lady is Vanessa cardui.  |

That seems to be the current name used by Butterfly Conservation, but you may find the synonym Cythia cardui in some books. |
