| | large orange/red flying insect in East Yorks My wife found this creature on a tarmac road very early this morning. When i went to look for it, it had gone. She took a photo on her phone, but i can't upload it to the site because 'the image is too small'. I have it on my pc and can email it to anyone who is interested.
Basically it is:
3 to 4" long overall
has an orange head, thorax and large wings (wings longer than body)
wings have the shape of a large sage leaf!
yellow segmented abdomen
wings have red tips
6 orange/red legs
RED EYES on side of head, head same width as body
has a thick smokey grey line along centre of top of each wing
has a large smokey grey patch on thorax
Any ideas please? |

Can you not resize the image to 800x600 pixels. If so then you should be able to load up the image into the Gallery then.
No idea what it could be from the description, but welcome to WAB.
Cheers |

To me, it sounds like an ichneumon wasp - perhaps an Ophioninae sub-family member, or a dragonfly of some description. Sounds interesting. |

It almost looks like something... aquatic?

| | | Re: large orange/red flying insect in East Yorks Thanks form uploading the picture Jason. My wife assures me that it moved and is not a child's toy! Walkington is 15 miles as the bee flies from the East Yorkshire coast. The bug was under a tree on a tarmac road (to keep warm?) at 5.30 this morning. By 6.30 it had disappeared. The village is surrounded by arable farmland. the eyes are definitely red and bulbous. |

| | | Re: large orange/red flying insect in East Yorks I wonder if it came in fruit, looks tropical Orthopteran to me!
My son worked on a Saturday market when a teenager for a while, brought home a bunch of bananas from which ran a huge colourful cockroach! I managed to capture it but it ran very fast, took it to the police station. They sent it to a vet for identification.
