| | | Unidentified what? My first post on this forum (if it works!) I thought I had posted this last night, but I can't see it, so I must have failed.
I saw this insect on my front door yesterday afternoon in Sheffield. It was about 3/4 to 1 inch long. I presumed it must have crawled away as I can't see any wings on it. I have searched my wildlife book and some internet sites, but can't find out what it is. It is probably something obvious - any ideas please?
As you can see I am having trouble. I think that I have uploaded the photo into the Gallery Image, but I can't seem to be able to get at it to post onto this thread.
HELP!!!

Looks like the caterpillar of the Vapourer moth.

| | | Re: Unidentified what? You managed to post it twice:
It's a caterpillar of the Vapourer Moth, the 4 little yellow toothbrushes on its back being the giveaway.
I think everyone struggles to begin with uploading images and finding them again: I certainly did. It helps to know that there are two locations: the Gallery and the Image Library. You probably looked for your picture in the Gallery but it was loaded into the Library.

| | | Re: Unidentified what? Hi Colin and welcome,
the image linking system takes a bit of getting used to but I'm sure you'll get the hang of it.
In the meantime your pic is here,
I think it is a Vapourer moth caterpillar.
Regards
Steve

| | | Re: Unidentified what? OK, thanks to all so far. I was hoping that it might be some rare insect that I had found, but never mind. It's nice to know what it is. I didn't know I had posted it twice!
