| | | Mystery ant
Can anyone please identify this ant which was photographed dragging an orb spider on a sandy bank yesterday? It nicked it from a episyron rufiped spider eating wasp.
I don't think it is the common garden ant but of course I might be wrong.
Would be most grateful for any help. |

I have a thread showing one I thought was the same, they are large compared to other ants and appear quite vicious when eating! Ant - Formica fusca?

Janet | Thanks Janet as you can see this chap was attempting to eat an orb spider left temporarily by a predatory wasp.
Real opportunist.

Brian. | It does appear they are opportunists! I was surprised to see an ant tearing away at the remains of a fly. I had another one chew off the tail end of a cranefly then carry it off, but it was smaller. I guess they're not so good at catching their own! | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
