Slugs climbing up the wall of a house

I was visiting friends last night and as I left my hostess said that she had to check if there were any slugs climbing up the side of her house. She had seen them the night before. We went outside and sure enough there were six slugs (of various sizes) "walking" up the white painted rendering wall at the front of her house. There was one large one near the roof and others half way up. As we watch the large one got to the top of the wall and disapeared. The others followed the same route. Has anyone any idea why they are doing this? Would they have come back down again? Or where are they now? How can they be stopped?
