Gian wasp/bee/hornet type thing?

Hey Okay, years ago, my mum and her friends came across this giant wasp thing... Or at least what looked like one. It looks like a wasp, massive wings and is roughly about 20 cm.. She didnt get a good look, she ran Im only asking cos i would like to know, has anyone ever came across this type of thing? And if yes, do you know the name?

At 20cm, I'd be surprised if it was even close to a wasp. Sounds more like a bird

If it was more like 10cm (sizes always over estimated with dragonflies) could have been a golden ringed dragonfly

I am about to start a thread on the Horntail - Urocerus gigas, perhaps it was one of them?

As Rich says it sounds like Urocerus gigas Horntail or Great Wood Wasp however they are totally harmless and cannot sting.
