| | | Mistaken identity. Need an ID Could you help me with another bug. I thought this was a red garden ant, and took a photo of it, then looked at the photo and it looks more like a parasitic wasp than an ant.
As the photo shows, it was found on an outside wall. This is near a damp place, nettles, thistles. |

| | | Re: Mistaken identity. Need an ID That is certainly an interesting conundrum and I can't offer an easy answer.
I agree that it doesn't show a typical ant like waist, but it isn't really very wasp like either and apparently lacks wings. There are a few wingless solitary wasps which have a slightly thicker waist but the antennae on your specimen are a bit on the long side and would appear to have an 'elbow' joint. Can you remember if this is correct as it would help to narrow down the possibilities.
There are a few wingless beetles and bugs but I can't easily match anything up. On the other hand it could possibily be a creature which has lost it's wings (eg after mating) or a juvenile which is yet to develop them.
Hopefully, this will encourage one of the 'real experts' to come along and give a more informed opinion. |

| | | Re: Mistaken identity. Need an ID Looks rather like an ichneumon I saw the other day laying eggs in a spider egg sac in one of my moths traps. I too dismissed it as an ant at a glance, but when I looked closer realised it was an ichneumon. |

| | | Re: Mistaken identity. Need an ID Apart from the image I don't really have much to go on, I just thought it was an ant, and really didn't look at it that well. Sorry
I'll keep looking around for a similar creature again, hopefully I'll find it again and get a better photo.
Not that I should question the expects, but isn't the ichneumon wasp a bit big, this little creature was only about 6-8mm long? |
