Large type of Hoverfly?
Can someone i.d. this please.First time I have come across it,sorry was only able to take side on shots as it flew away before I could move round

That is a rather bright individual but it appears to match for V. zonaria. V. inanis lacks the brown on the abdomen.

Apparently a fairly recent arrival (about 50 years) but is found near the south coast and Bristol.

... and reasonably common in the London area too. I saw several around today, I think they are just getting going in numbers in this area. Mick.
