I have absolutely no idea!

The genus is huge, and worldwide.... and very variable!

couldn't the 'yellow collar' be accidentally collected pollen? i've seen bees come out of a Himalayan balsam flower with their heads covered in pollen

Possibly. I shall watch the same plant at the same time this afternoon to see if the bee returns and this time I shall be armed with proper camera and will know more what I should be looking out for. If there is anything to report I shall let you know.
