It is a 22-Spot Ladybird - Psyllobora 22-punctata, however this is a native species, your wife may be thinking of the non-native Harlequin Ladybird which is spreading across the UK at the moment.

Yes 22 spot not a Harlequin. They have black mark similar to letter 'M' just behind the head on thorax plate.

They come in a range of colours red/black and can be orange-yellowy with small black spots not disimilar to 22 spot.

The 22-spots feed on mildews normally on herbaceous plants. |
